If you used it while you had the outbreak then yes you need to buy new or using the old could cause another outbreak. If I had a cold sore that seems to be healed, do I then need to buy new lipgloss, lipstick and lip balms?

no you dont have to i would maybe wipe the top layer of but you dont have to throw them away
I've been getting cold sores for as long as I can remember (I'm 36) and I've never had a cold sore come back from using lipstick/gloss, etc. that I used while having the sore.

However, experts say that it is contagious and one should practice good hygiene during attacks.

you don't HAVE to. but you can reinfect yourself. it would be a really good idea to throw away your tooth brush when the lesion has healed and keep a new one on hand for the future.

the best thing to do is avoid the lip gloss, lipsticks, etc when you have a lesion. that way you don't have to discard those expensive tubes afterward.
if you used ur gloss when u had coldsore i would advize you not to use again incase it comes back
yes, the safest thing to do is throw away the product to prevent another outbreak on you or others who you may share your make up with.
